Plein air, French for “outdoor” or “in the open air,” refers to the tradition of landscape painting in the nineteenth century. In this intermediate level workshop, students will go over the fundamentals of working with pastel in plein air, responding to the outdoor park area around the Wilson Center. Students will bring their own soft/chalk pastels, sketch book, chair and a few additional supplies to be emailed in advance.  Pastel technique and application in both wet and dry forms will be discussed to create quick notations of the natural world. With a focus in color theory and mark making, we will explore how to capture the essence of trees, plants, and more! Class will be moved indoors in the case of inclement weather.
