At the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts, the experience begins long before the curtain rises. From the moment patrons walk through our doors, they are greeted by friendly faces ready to guide them to their seats, answer questions, and ensure their visit is enjoyable from start to finish. These are our ushers—dedicated volunteers who play a vital role in everything we do.
This month, we’re highlighting two of our wonderful ushers, Jenny and Lisa, who each bring their own passion and personality to the Wilson Center.
For Jenny, volunteering is a meaningful way to stay connected to both people and the arts. After raising her family and spending more than 35 years in customer service, she was ready to give back in a new way. “I wanted to share a smiling face and helping hands,” she said. After attending a Starry Nights concert, she was drawn to the beautiful setting, welcoming atmosphere, and friendly staff—and soon joined the volunteer team.
Jenny especially enjoys the variety of performances and the connections she makes along the way. Whether she’s listening to music, chatting with patrons about a show, or dancing alongside families at outdoor events, she finds joy in every moment. “When people say, ‘Thank you for the great show—we’ll come back again,’ that is the most rewarding feeling,” she shared.
Lisa has always been passionate about volunteering and was drawn to the Wilson Center for its unique setting and diverse programming. “We’re so fortunate to have such a wide variety of performances right here in Brookfield,” she said.
For Lisa, ushering is about creating a welcoming and enjoyable experience for every guest. From helping patrons find their seats to offering assistance in a darkened theater, she values the small moments that make a big difference. “The performance will entertain them, but being a thoughtful usher is the cherry on top,” she said.
She also enjoys volunteering at Starry Nights, especially in the Kids Zone. “It’s a fun, relaxed atmosphere with great music,” she said. “I’ve loved helping with activities—and while I’m still improving my temporary tattoo skills, the kids have been very patient!”

Both Jenny and Lisa embody the spirit of volunteerism that makes the Wilson Center such a welcoming place. Their time, energy, and kindness help create memorable experiences for thousands of guests each year.
